PRE-PHILLOXERA VINEYARD

The Dominio de Atauta vineyard is about a century and a half old, and in any case, the age of the vines does not fall below 85 years. This is one of the oldest vineyards in Europe.

Its age, the poor and shallow soils and the extremely careful work done in the vineyards result in very small productions. Each vine produces a quantity of grapes to produce less than a 0.75 l bottle.

HIGH-ALTITUDE VINEYARD

The Atauta Valley is located at 100 meters above sea level. This allows the grape to ripen more slowly, harmoniously and balanced. In addition, the wind that constantly flows through the valley from west to east contributes to a low humidity in the vines, helping to avoid diseases.

SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION

The planting frame is very narrow, that is why we do everything by hand, in the traditional way. Soil treatments are completely natural, we only use compost with an animal and vegetable origin.

This is a heavily eroded valley, that is why, although it is small (4km long and 1km wide) it has a great soil diversity, both in composition and in depth of soil available for the plant, depending on whether it is located in a valley, moor or hillside area.

The common characteristic to every soil is the calcareous rock that exists at depth and provides minerality to the grape and prevents the roots from going deeper into the soil.

These orographic conditions of the valley along with the climate in the area: low rainfall, low average temperatures and wide temperature range between night and day during the months of grape ripening, make them ideal factors for the vine cultivation and grape ripening.
